Numeracy

At Newington Primary School, our Numeracy program is built on evidence informed practices that are carefully tailored to each student. Our goal is to support every learner in achieving optimal growth and sustained success.

• Daily Review — Students revisit key concepts and prior learning to strengthen long term retention. This includes recalling previously taught content and practising number fact fluency to reduce cognitive load and build automaticity.
• Explicit and Scaffolded Teaching — Mathematical content is explicitly taught to the whole class or in small groups based on student needs. Teachers model concepts using structured worked examples, while students use mini whiteboards for teachers to check student understanding and students receive immediate feedback. 
• Application — Students apply newly learned skills through individual, paired, or small group tasks. Activities are intentionally planned and differentiated to match each learner’s needs, ensuring engagement and ongoing progress. Students may use concrete materials and manipulatives to support their thinking, alongside targeted teacher guidance. Problem‑solving tasks are applied to real‑life contexts and are used to strengthen students’ knowledge of mathematical concepts, helping them make meaningful connections between classroom learning and everyday situations.
• Reflection — Reflection is a vital component of every numeracy lesson. It allows students to evaluate their success, articulate their understanding, and identify for next steps. This process also provides teachers with valuable insight into student progress and helps establish a clear pathway into future learning.
